Titles and permalinks

A permalink is a permanent URL (or, link) to an individual post, page, or archive.

When you create a new post or page in WordPress, its title is the basis for its automatically-generated permalink. As you can see in the image to the right, it’s the same as the title, but all lowercase and with hyphens instead of spaces (and no special characters).

Notice here how the permalink updates automatically when we rename the template in this video.

This doesn’t always happen automatically, so if you change the title of a post or page, keep an eye on its permalink.

Note

Permalinks also affect your SEO scores. When your permalinks reflect the content or purpose of your posts and pages, search engines evaluate them as genuine and legitimate, and give them priority in their rankings.

The quickest, most straightforward way to sync your title and permalink is to select the full title and copy it, then paste that into the permalink field. WordPress will automatically convert it to the proper format after you move out of the permalink field.
